Four defendants in the case concerning Özgür Gündem, a daily newspaper that was shut down in 2016, have received prison sentences on "terrorism-related" charges.

The İstanbul 23rd Heavy Penal Court sentenced Zana Kaya, the newspaper's editor in chief for 1 year and 13 months in prison for "terrorist propaganda."

The newspaper's grant holder Kemal Sancılı, managing editor İnan Kızılkaya and attorney Eren Keskin have been sentenced to 6 years and 4 months in prison for "being a member of a terrorist organization."

After the ruling, Keskin wrote on Twitter that "I've been in the human rights movement for 30 years. I stood trial many times, I stayed in prison because of my thoughts. But for the first time I was deemed to be 'a member of an armed organization' and received a sentence. 6 years, 3 months. I'm not going anywhere. I'm here."
