Businessperson and rights defender Osman Kavala, who was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment in late April for "attempting to overthrow the government" in the Gezi trial, completed the fifth year of his imprisonment today (November 1).

Türkiye’s failure to release human rights defender Osman Kavala from prison may have far reaching consequences for all those seeking justice in the country, a UN expert warned today.

“This month marks five years since Osman Kavala was arrested and Türkiye has now twice ignored binding rulings of the highest human rights court in Europe for his release,” said Mary Lawlor, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.

“Türkiye’s continued disregard for the court’s decision is a dangerous attack on the regional human rights mechanism,” she said.

The World Medical Association has issued a strong condemnation about the arrest in Turkey of Dr. Şebnem Korur Fincancı, President of the Turkish Medical Association.

She was detained today in Istanbul after claims that she made comments about the use of poisonous gas against Kurds in Iraq.

Dr. Frank Ulrich Montgomery, Chair of the WMA Council, said today: ‘It is totally unacceptable that Dr. Korur Fincancı has been detained and that members of the Turkish Medical Association are being threatened with suspension.
