Tayfun Kahraman

Tayfun Kahraman was the Chairman of the Chamber of City Planners at the time when the Gezi protests broke out. He played an active role within the Taksim Solidarity. He was the person who announced to the public the demands of Taksim Solidarity on their behalf following the meeting with Bülent Arınç, the Deputy Prime Minister at the time, on June 5th, 2013. Later, he was present at the meeting with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan - Prime Minister at the time. Kahraman received a prison sentence of 18 years for “aiding the attempt to overthrow the government”.

The rector’s office of Istanbul’s prestigious Boğaziçi University has banned the showing of films related to LGBTI issues during an open-air film screening at the university premises, online news outlet Diken reported.

Can Candan, a documentary filmmaker and a lecturer at Boğaziçi University's Department of Western Languages and Literatures for 15 years, has won the lawsuit against his dismissal.

The İstanbul 7th Administrative Court, which previously ordered the stay of the execution of the decision for his dismissal, annulled the decision, concluding that it was unlawful.

Europe's top rights court said on Monday Turkey had not complied with a ruling that called for the release of philanthropist Osman Kavala, moving further in a process that could lead to Ankara's suspension from the Council of Europe (CoE).

The Committee of Ministers of the CoE, which oversees the implementation of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings, referred the case back to the court in February.

Like Can Candan, filmmaker, producer, and journalist Çiğdem Mater uses the language of art for defending rights. She has been involved in the making of many award-winning films and documentaries. She worked as the coordinator for the Anadolu Kültür Caucasus programs, the Boğaziçi University Mithat Alam Film Center, and the Turkey coordinator of the Armenia-Turkey Cinema Platform. Mater returned to Turkey from Germany for the sentencing hearing of the Gezi Trial. She was sentenced to 18 years in prison and arrested on the grounds that she was a flight risk.

Hakan Altınay

Hakan Altınay is an internationally acclaimed academician, the director of the Open Society Foundation of Turkey, the administrator of Boğaziçi European School of Politics, board member of Anadolu Kültür, and the Chairman of Global Civics Academy. In 2018, he was detained with 12 others from academic and civil society backgrounds. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison during the Gezi trial for aiding the attempt to overthrow the government. He is currently imprisoned at the Silivri Prison although his judicial process is not yet over.

For 15 years, the Tarlabaşı Community Support Association - Tarlabaşı Community Center (TTM) has been working to build safe spaces for women and children to come together in Tarlabaşı and to support the rights of women and children that have been disadvantaged or discriminated against. They have been experiencing an arbitrary and unpredictable process that began with hate speech and targeting news from the media, and was followed up by administrative and legal sanctions against them.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) Grand Chamber has announced that the case of Osman Kavala will be heard on July 11 at 11 a.m. in Strasbourg. The hearing will be open to the public.

The Grand Chamber will convene to determine whether Turkey abided by the ECtHR verdict on Kavala as per article 46/1 of the European Convention on Human Rights on "binding force and execution of judgments."
