Homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey, but hostility to it is widespread and the police crackdown on the parades has been increasingly tougher over the years.

Turkish police blocked hundreds of people from gathering for Istanbul's annual Pride parade on Sunday and detained dozens after local authorities banned the march from going ahead again this year.

The rector's office of Ankara's prestigious Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) has announced that it will not let students organize a pride march that was planned for June 10.

In an email sent to students, the ODTÜ management said: “All kinds of security measures will be undertaken in case of a continuance of persistence for this unauthorized march planned on our campus.”

Data of the TİHV information note is collected by Regional Solidarity and Coordination Groups that are established to identify cases of repression and challenges faced by human rights defenders in Adana, Ankara, Diyarbakır, İstanbul, İzmir, Van, and nearby cities.

Several hundred women protested outside an Istanbul court on Wednesday ahead of a hearing to close a well-known anti-femicide campaign group.

Waving banners with slogans such as "You will never walk alone!" and "We will stop women's murders," the protesters gathered outside Istanbul's main court to demonstrate against a case to shut down We Will Stop Femicide Platform, one of Turkey's leading feminist organisations.

Turkish police clashed with protesters around Istanbul's main Taksim Square on Tuesday and 170 people were detained as they gathered to mark the anniversary of nationwide anti-government demonstrations that began nine years ago in nearby Gezi Park.

Having labored for years in the fields of education and rights defending, Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi is among the founders of the Nesin and Mesopotamia Foundations, and a member of the founding board of Istanbul Bilgi University. He is the former Chairman of the Board of Truth Justice Memory Center (Hakikat Adalet Hafıza Merkezi) and the Vice Chairman of the Board of Anadolu Kültür. He is also a board member at the Terakki Foundation Schools (Terakki Vakfı Okulları). An arrest warrant was issued for Ekmekçi who was sentenced to 18 years in prison at the Gezi Trial.
