The Istanbul 30th Heavy Penal Court on May 21 began the retrial of renowned activist Osman Kavala and 15 others over the Gezi Park protests. The court ruled to keep Kavala behind bars by a majority of votes, with the chief judge dissenting the decision. In his defense statement, Kavala said that charges against him resemble the legal basis utilized in Nazi Germany.
The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of Cassation has demanded that the prison sentences given to Özlem Dalkıran, İdil Eser and Günal Kurşun be reversed and the prison sentence of Taner Kılıç be upheld.
The cases of seven defendants in the Gezi trial have been merged with the main trial in today's (April 28) hearing.

Bar association heads have filed a criminal complaint against Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu and Ankara Governor Vasip Şahin for authorizing the police to halt their Defense March through a violent intervention. The criminal petition said that police officers at the scene of the incident “deprived the bar heads of their liberty” and “imposed torture and ill-treatment on them.”
The Central Council members of the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) for the past term are now being charged under the Turkish Penal Code since their statement “War is a Public Health Problem” is considered as “propaganda for the terrorist organization” and “openly provoking people to hatred and enmity.” The first court session of the case was held at Ankara 32nd High Criminal Court on 27 December 2018. The next session will be held on 20 March 2019.
Aytül Uçar, who has been working at the İzmir Representative Office of Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) for 23 years, was detained on February 3rd, 2021 during the protest of the President’s designation of the Boğaziçi University rector. Two separate lawsuits were filed against Uçar for “defamation of the President” and “defiance of the Law no 2911”. Aytül Uçar is currently awaiting trial.
Rights defender Halime Şaman is a member of Marmaris Kent Konseyi Çevreden Sorumlu Yürütme Kurulu (Marmaris City Council Environmental Executive Committee) and the spokesperson for Muğla Environmental Platform (MUÇEP). Şaman has been sued for damages by Sinpaş GYO due to her statements about the company’s ongoing hotel and time-share housing constructions in İçmeler.
