PEN Ukraine President and novelist Andriy Kurkov has addressed a letter of solidarity to arrested businessperson and rights defender Osman Kavala, who has been behind bars in Turkey for 1,113 days.

Human rights defender Dr. Serdar Küni has been sentenced to 4 years, 2 months in prison again in retrial.

Dr. Küni, who was a reference physician from the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) Cizre Reference Center, was arrested on October 19, 2016. Facing charges for "helping people who were allegedly members of [a terrorist] organization and being a member of the organization" himself, Küni was released by the court on April 24, 2017.

The panel “LGBTI+ Rights in Turkey and Poland”, the third of the series “Shrinking Democratic Spaces and International Solidarity”, will be held online on November 18, Wednesday at 16.00 (GMT+3).

The Twitter account of Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) was suspended on Nov. 9, as a critical law concerning workers’ rights is debated in parliament. The confederation had slammed the bill for robbing workers of severance pay, along with other essential rights.

The panel “Digital Rights at the Pendulum of Freedom and Oversight”, the second of the series “Shrinking Democratic Spaces and International Solidarity”, will be held online on November 5, Thursday at 16.00 (GMT+3).

The Turkish Government’s recent announcement that it intends to dismantle the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) ‘to protect patients and the profession from terrorists’ has been strongly criticised by the World Medical Association.

At its annual Assembly, being held online this week, the WMA said that describing thousands of physician members of the TMA as terrorists ‘constitutes a grave defamation and an insult to the entire profession’.

Court proceedings over the 2015 killing of human rights lawyer Tahir Elci were postponed Oct. 21 until March 2021 after defense attorneys requested the recusal of the trial’s judge panel.
