Women who were detained during a demonstration in support of the İstanbul Convention in İzmir have been released.

In response to the public debates in pro-government circles on whether Turkey should abandon the convention on violence against women, demonstrations were in 16 cities yesterday (August 5).

The U.S. Department of State demanded from Turkey, the release of Osman Kavala, who has been imprisoned for 1000 days without conviction.

The conviction of four human rights defenders on July 3, 2020, without evidence of any criminal wrongdoing, is politically motivated and an effort to stifle the legitimate work of Turkey’s human rights movement, Human Rights Watch said today.

This prosecution, which has nothing to do with the laws and should have never been opened in the first place, is concluded with another unlawful decision. The court decision based solely on trumped-up charges, all of which have already been refuted, is another stain on Turkey’s judicial history.

As we said before the hearing, we won’t accept the conviction of even a single friend of ours. We’ll keep monitoring this case as it goes through the appeal process.
